Chelsea are reportedly back in the hunt for Robert Lewandowski, who is also being targeted by Manchester United over a move this summer

According to a report by Daily Star, Maurizio Sarri has instructed the Chelsea board to land Robert Lewandowski before the summer transfer window slams shut in nine days. The Bayern Munich striker is also the subject of interest from Manchester United.

Lewandowski has gone on to achieve great things since switching allegiances from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich four years ago. Bundesliga top scorer in two of these seasons, the Pole has a staggering record 151 goals and 35 assists in 195 appearances for Die Roten.

But, his future has been under a cloud for much of the summer transfer window, with widespread reports claiming that the player is ready for a new challenge. His uncertain position has piqued the interest of several clubs, including Real Madrid. But, Manchester United and Chelsea seem to be the front-runners in his pursuit now.

At Manchester United, the need for a top class striker is non-existential, which makes their interest in Lewandowski rather perplexing. Instead, with not long to go before the summer transfer window slams shut, the Red Devils would be better advised investing in other areas of the squad.

Romelu Lukaku enjoyed a solid debut season at Old Trafford, and should ideally only get better with time, which should alleviate the need for a striker at Manchester United. But, Chelsea’s interest in the Polish hitman makes a lot of sense.

Alvaro Morata had a campaign to forget after making a strong start to his Chelsea stint last season. While it is now believed that the Spaniard has been given assurances over his role as a regular next term, added competition in the form of Lewandowski could help bring the best out of the Spaniard.

Gonzalo Higuain was believed to be the priority for Chelsea. But, the Blues now look set to lose out to AC Milan in pursuit of the Argentinian striker. If they intend on signing a striker this summer, Chelsea will have to move quickly to land Lewandowski, beating Manchester United in the process.

But, Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac has already iterated that Lewandowski will remain at the Allianz Arena by the time the summer transfer window slams shut. So, it looks like a tall order for Chelsea, or Manchester United for that matter, to convince the Bavarians in time to part ways with the Polish striker.

Nine days still remain for the transfer window to shut down in England, and it remains to be seen if either club is able to land Lewandowski. For now though, it looks like the star striker is set to remain at Bayern Munich.
