Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a second goalkeeper signing this summer, with Borussia Monchengladbach star Yann Sommer emerging as a target.

According to reports from Spanish outlet Marca, Premier League giants Arsenal are closing in on their sixth signing of the summer, with goalkeeper Yann Sommer nearing a move to the Emirates.

The Gunners, under new manager Unai Emery, have been one of the most active Premier League clubs in the ongoing transfer window, having already made five signings, including a goalkeeper. The North Londoners have already brought in German international Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen in a £19 million deal.

But manager Emery is keen on recruiting another shot-stopper before the transfer window slams shut, as he remains keen on adding more quality depth to the squad.

Current first-choice goalkeeper Petr Cech has been linked with a move away this summer, while Colombian international David Ospina is also rumoured to be headed for an exit. Should the two seasoned goalies depart, Arsenal would be left with just the relatively inexperienced Emiliano Martinez as the solitary backup for Leno.

The German also did not have the best of the initiations to life in England, as he made a mistake in the pre-season friendly against Brentford, which ended up costing his side the game. And this has prompted the Gunners to look at additional goalkeeping options, with Sommer emerging as a possible target.

The Switzerland international is one of the most underrated goalkeepers across Europe and has been impressing for Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach for four years now, having joined the club in 2014 from FC Basel.

Sommer has racked up 172 appearances for Gladbach, 33 of which came in the 2017/18 season, during which he managed eight clean sheets. The 29-year old further enhanced his reputation this summer, as he emerged as one of Switzerland’s stand out players in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Arsenal, however, will have to stave off competition from La Liga champions Barcelona, who are also reportedly in the hunt for Sommer’s signing, as they look for a replacement for Jasper Cillesen, with the Dutchman being strongly linked with a summer exit from Camp Nou. But, as per the reports, the North Londoners have already entered negotiations with Monchengladbach, putting them in a formidable position.

Sommer has three years left on his contract with the German outfit and is likely to cost a good chunk of money. But, given the volume of experience under his belt and his proven pedigree at the top level, the 39-time capped Swiss international has the potential to be an excellent addition to the Arsenal side.
