Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has shockingly emerged as a candidate for Real Madrid as they look to beef up their frontline.

Spanish publication Don Balon are in with another shocking rumour. This one though, might make a bit of sense. Real Madrid are reportedly interested in Romelu Lukaku. The Manchester United striker has emerged as a shock option to take over the baton from Karim Benzema and spearhead the Real Madrid frontline.

Romelu Lukaku has been a known name in world football since his teens. While he did not manage to cut it at Chelsea, the Belgian established himself as a natural goalscorer at Everton. This earned him a move to Manchester United – a reunion with Jose Mourinho.

Many expected Lukaku to fail at United as the club had not had forwards such as the Belgian before. But, the former Everton star surprised everyone by having an above average maiden season. Not only did he score goals for Manchester United, his ability to bring his teammates forward and create chances also shined. Lukaku finished the season with 27 goals and 9 assists to his name.

The Belgian has been at it in Russia as well. Lukaku scored a brace each against Panama and Tunisia to secure Belgian’s qualification to the Round of 16. While he did not score in the Round of 16 tie against Japan, his clutch dummy to leave the ball to Nacer Chadli for the winner was highlighted as one of the best plays of the match.

The report iterates that Julen Lopetegui is an admirer of Lukaku and would very much like to add him to the Real Madrid squad. Don Balon curiously add to the rumour by saying that the manager wants the player irrespective of the fate of their pursuit of PSG duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

While Don Balon does say that Manchester United are open to negotiations, it is tough to believe so. Jose Mourinho has been looking to add a striker to his squad. But, any arrival is to act as a deputy to Lukaku, with Marcus Rashford being used more as a winger.

Mourinho and Lukaku seem to share mutual admiration for each other. The Portuguese’s comments post Lukaku’s arrival and during the entirety of the seasons have been positive as regards his star striker.

It is tough to envisage Manchester United being ready to deal away a striker as good as Lukaku, who could be deadlier with better service. But, should Manchester United make up their mind about competing with Juventus for Cristiano Ronaldo, they could sacrifice Lukaku in order to make space for the former Red Devil and also to edge the Italian champions in his pursuit.

Any other scenario that sees Lukaku depart Manchester United for Real Madrid looks improbable.
