Luka Modric could be on his way out of Real Madrid this summer, with a return to Tottenham reportedly possible.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Don Balon, there is a major possibility that Luka Modric could be on his way out of Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. Tottenham are interested in re-signing the Croat, who is seeking assurances of regular game time for next season.

Modric has come a long since being branded as the worst summer signing of 2012 in Spain upon his move from Tottenham. In fact, the Croatian international has gone on to establish himself as one of the pillars of success that Real Madrid have achieved in the last half-a-decade or so, and is widely rated among the best midfielders in the world.

However, with Modric 32 now, there have been talks of finding a successor and phasing him out of the first-team setup slowly. The player is set to make it abundantly clear that he intends to remain an indispensable member of the first-team squad next season and is set to seek assurances over game time from Julen Lopetegui.

If the new Real Madrid manager fails to do so, a possible return to the Premier League looms for Modric, with a return to Tottenham being mooted. In fact, the North Londoners have already tabled an offer to the Croatian midfielder and will move forward on negotiations with Real Madrid if there’s a possibility to sign him.

Tottenham could very well do with a seasoned campaigner like Modric to provide the balance in the first-team squad. With Mousa Dembele highly likely to depart this summer, Modric could prove to be a stellar addition, who would boost Mauricio Pochettino’s creative options considerably.

By the looks of it, Tottenham’s chances of signing the 32-year-old could be quite high as Lopetegui is eager to sign Thiago Alcantara as Modric’s successor, with Miralem Pjanic another option being floated by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

What seems to be clear is that Real Madrid are prioritising a succession plan for Modric, which could see him depart from the Bernabeu this summer. But, all that will have to wait for now, with the player only expected to hold talks with Lopetegui after Croatia’s World Cup campaign.

So, for now, Modric’s focus remains on leading Croatia to a successful World Cup campaign, having already played a leading role en route to qualifying for the Round of 16. But, a move back to Tottenham from Real Madrid could certainly be a possibility once he returns to the Spanish capital.
