Manchester United are closing in on agreeing on a new deal with midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who will be out of contract at the end of the season.

Manchester United are on the verge of finalizing new terms with midfielder Marouane Fellaini according to manager Jose Mourinho, a report from Sky Sports claims.

The 30-year old Belgian international will be out of contract with the Red Devils at the end of the season and had been constantly linked with a move away from the Old Trafford.

However, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho hinted at the possibility of the former Everton man following their 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday, when Fellaini scored a late winner to seal three points for his team. The win secured a top-four finish and Champions League football next season for the Red Devils.

Post the game when queried about Fellaini’s future, Mourinho was quoted as saying:

“The position is that we are almost there. But in football, the almost is not enough. I think we are almost there, but I can’t celebrate because almost is not enough.

“I want to see the white paper with the United crest, Ed Woodward’s signature and Marouane’s signature.”

Fellaini was signed for Manchester United by former manager David Moyes in the summer of 2013, for a fee believed to be in the range of £27.5 million. The midfielder has never been able to win over the club’s supporters completely but has managed to survive two managerial sackings and has grew in prominence ever since Jose took over at the club in the summer of 2016.

Since joining the club, Fellaini has gone onto make 155 appearances in all competitions, scoring 20 goals and registering 10 assists, winning one FA Cup and EFL Cup each along with an UEFA Europa League trophy as well. In the ongoing season, the 30-year old has taken the field on only 22 occasions, finding the net on five occasions and setting up one strike.

Fellaini had reportedly rejected an offer from Manchester United already amid interest from various quarters across Europe, including the likes of AS Monaco and Galatasaray.

However, Mourinho was always keen on keeping hold of his star midfielder. The Portuguese tactician has time and again reiterated his desire to not lose the Belgian, stating that he is a key component of the Red Devils’ squad. And it seems like the club have succeeded in convincing the player to sign a new contract.
