Gary Neville has backed Mauricio Pochettino to succeed Jose Mourinho when the Portuguese manager calls it a day at Manchester United.

Gary Neville, while appearing on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports, has claimed that Mauricio Pochettino as the perfect candidate to take over as the Manchester United manager when Jose Mourinho calls it a day at Old Trafford, praising the work that the Argentina has done at Tottenham.

Pochettino took over at Tottenham in the summer of 2014, with the North Londoners then an outfit that only just qualified for Europe, let alone being a regular face in the top four of the Premier League. Over the last four years though, the Argentine has overseen a fantastic turnaround which has seen Spurs become Premier League contenders.

In fact, Tottenham are on course for the third successive Champions League qualification, with a big chance of finishing third on the table. Spurs’ performance in the Champions League this season also suggests a positive shift in temperament, with the club matching up well against some of the best teams in Europe.

However, Tottenham’s rise under Pochettino has brought a lot of attention to the manager, with the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid setting their sights on him. As per Gary Neville, Manchester United should join the race to sign him in the coming years.

The Red Devils have made good progress under Jose Mourinho, having won two major trophies in his first season in-charge, and in contention to win the FA Cup this season. Their fortunes have improved in the Premier League as well, with Manchester United set to finish second on the table.

Neville was all praise for Mourinho, iterating that he would like to see him remain at Old Trafford for at least three more years, and win multiple Premier League titles. But he went on to add that whenever the manager moves on, he would like to see Pochettino take over as the Manchester United boss.

“When Jose Mourinho’s time at Manchester United has finished, whether that is one year, two year or three years, and I hope he wins multiple league titles because I think he is a fantastic manager, this is the guy that I would want to manage the club I support.”

“That’s because I think he is the guy who deserves it. I think it is the same for Paris Saint-Germain and I think it’s the same for Real Madrid. And I think that Daniel Levy knows that.”

Indeed, Pochettino’s footballing style would complement the talents in the squad quite well, which might also please a section of the Manchester United faithfuls if the team starts playing attractive football. It remains to be seen though, if the Argentine indeed makes his way to Old Trafford to succeed Mourinho.
