Barcelona have reportedly set their sights on Julian Weigl, with the Catalans getting the green light from Lionel Messi for the player’s signature.

According to a report by Spanish publication Don Balon, Julian Weigl is the subject of interest from Barcelona, who are eager to sign a midfielder in the summer transfer window. The Blaugrana have even received the green light from Lionel Messi to launch the offensive for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder.

Weigl has been a hot property in Europe for a while now, with the player widely regarded as one of the most promising midfield prospects in world football at the present moment. A regular in the first-team setup at Borussia Dortmund, the German international has been lauded for his screening abilities in front of the backline.

Additionally, his ability to dictate the tempo of the game as well as those on the ball seem to have piqued the interest of a club that is known for its possession-based football style. Ernesto Valverde does have a gamut of midfield options at his disposal at the present moment, with Brazilian midfielder Arthur set to be added to his squad in the summer. But, the future of Andres Iniesta is up in the air, with the Barcelona captain himself adding to the uncertainty in recent weeks with his comments.

The veteran Spaniard has been urged by his teammates to remain at Barcelona beyond the summer, but it looks likely that he may depart from Camp Nou. Add to that the fact that the likes of Andre Gomes and Denis Suarez haven’t managed to impress over the last two seasons means that Valverde’s options do not look that strong, at least when it comes to strength in depth.

Additionally, with Sergio Busquets set to turn 30 in July, Barcelona ought to lay down the succession plan for the Spain international. Weigl, with his all his qualities and traits seems to be a like-for-like replacement makes him a viable target.

The player’s signature has also been approved by Lionel Messi, who is known to keep a close eye on the transfer activities of the Catalan club. With the player believed to have a promising future, Messi is of the opinion that he is an essential addition for Barcelona for the summer.

Barcelona also have the added incentive of the player formerly attracting interest from Real Madrid, with their bitter rivals possibly coming back for him. Swooping him away to Camp Nou instead will be seen as a fantastic piece of business, and the Blaugrana are set to accelerate the process of signing him.
