Barcelona are reportedly closing in on a move to sign Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, who is also a priority target for Real Madrid.

According to Spanish publication Don Balon, Barcelona are in advanced talks with Bayern Munich to bring David Alaba in when the transfer window reopens. The Austrian international is also a target for Real Madrid in the summer. But, it looks like Barcelona are in pole position to land the versatile superstar.

David Alaba has established himself as one of the few player who can be considered as world-class in more than one position. The Austrian has become a regular at Bayern Munich and within the Austrian National setup as well. The 25-year-old has been impressive this season as well for the club.

But, his performances is drawing the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, both of whom were linked to the Austrian previously as well.

At Real Madrid, Marcelo and Theo Hernandez are the only options at left-back while even at centre-back, there are not much quality options at Zidane’s disposal besides Sergio Ramos, Nacho and Raphael Varane. In Alaba they could bring in a player who can be deployed at either position, thus adding extra depth to the squad.

Barcelona on the other hand, seem to be more in need of reinforcements at left-back. While the Catalans do have Jordi Alba and Lucas Digne, the latter looks to be on his way out in search of finding a new home where he can be a more prominent part of the first-team setup.

Even Alba has not been displaying the same level of consistency in his displays, which has seen Barcelona linked with Alaba. Add to that the fact that the club is looking to send Yerry Mina out on loan for a season to gain some experience in Europe and thus, Alaba’s arrival would enable them to add more depth to their squad, just like Real Madrid.

The report entails that Barcelona are closing in on a deal to sign David Alaba, with the talks at an advanced stage. Real Madrid might still be able to play spoilsport, with nothing done as of yet.

But, one thing is for sure, Barcelona are in pole position to land Alaba and Real Madrid are left playing catch up.
