Manchester United are reportedly yet to initiate contract talks with superstar David De Gea, who has been linked again with Real Madrid.

According to a Yahoo Sports exclusive, Manchester United could run into troubled waters in their bid to keep David De Gea at Old Trafford. The Spaniard has once again been linked with Real Madrid of late, but is yet to be tabled a new contract offer by Manchester United.

David De Gea’s current Manchester United contract runs till the summer of 2019 and while the club does have an option to extend the Spaniard’s contract by a year, his performances warrant a improved deal, especially with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba earning considerably more than the custodian.

David De Gea is quite undisputedly, one of the best keepers in world football right now and Manchester United’s best performer for the last five years or so, as the season-ending club awards have shown, with De Gea becoming the first player to win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award in three successive campaigns.

This season as well, De Gea has been a rock at the back and has shown his pedigree to make world-class saves with both hands and feet, boasting a record of 15 shutouts in 29 Premier League appearances thus far. His influence can be quite characterised by his incredible save that he pulled against Crystal Palace on Monday – an almost inevitable goal, which was one of the main reasons United won the game 3-2.

Real Madrid though, are set to come knocking again for De Gea in the summer, after a botched attempt to land the Spaniard earlier, an attempt which involved the fax machine saga.

Real Madrid’s defence has been woeful this season and Keylor Navas has been found out largely because of his inability to pull off consistently good performances. While the Costa Rican is a good goalkeeper, he is not consistent enough, which is necessary, especially when the defence in front fails to keep the attackers at bay.

David De Gea’s save percentage is the highest in the Premier League and in the UEFA Champions League as well. Real Madrid will be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper and while all the signs point towards them turning their attention towards Thibaut Courtois, De Gea’s potential availability might just tempt them to reignite their interest in the Spaniard.

The report states that while De Gea is happy to sign the dotted line at United, the lack of urgency shown by the club in handing De Gea an improved new contract might just make the keeper change his mind about seeking a move to Real Madrid.

For now, it seems De Gea will stay put at Manchester United, who are all but likely to offer him a new deal soon. But, if there are any changes or twists in the tale, Real Madrid will be waiting in the wings to pounce on the opportunity and facilitate De Gea’s return to the Spanish capital.
