Barcelona are reportedly monitoring Lyon defender Ferland Mendy and are looking to potentially bring the player in once the transfer window reopens.

According to Spanish publication AS, Ferland Mendy could be on his way to Spain, if Barcelona have their way. The report states that the Catalans are monitoring the Lyon defender’s performance in Ligue 1 with a view to bringing him in the summer transfer window.

According to the report, Barcelona will target Mendy as a potential replacement for Lucas Digne, who seems to be on his way out of the club. Digne has not managed to establish himself as a regular and with the player looking to become a key part of the squad, something that does not seem possible at Barcelona, he looks set to ask for a move in the summer.

Ferland Mendy is a player who has thus far, flown under the radar, of sorts. Emanating from the Le Havre youth setup, the player joined Lyon in the summer of 2017 and has established himself as a starter for the club in his maiden Ligue 1 season for the French heavyweights.

Barcelona have Lucas Digne and Jordi Alba as their options at left-back. But, as aforementioned, Digne is likely to exit the club in the summer while Alba himself has not been as impressive as his previous campaigns and has being linked with a move away from the club as well.

While 22-year-old Ferland Mendy is not the kind of player who is likely to be the one to become an instant starter at Barcelona, the club is looking to take inspiration from their purchase of Samuel Umtiti, who arrived from Lyon and has now become an insoluble part of the first-team setup – one of the first names on the team sheet at Barcelona now.

And Barcelona would hope Mendy would be able to have a similar impact upon his arrival at the club. Indeed, negotiations would also be able to go a lot smoother in pursuit of the 22-year-old, in comparison to other targets in the same position, with Barcelona having already dealt with Lyon successfully.
