Arsenal have reportedly set their sights on Timo Werner, and are eyeing a summer move for the RB Leipzig striker.

According to a report by The Sun, Timo Werner is the subject of interest from Arsenal, who had him monitored during RB Leipzig’s Europa League clash against Napoli this week. The Gunners are now plotting a summer move for the German striker, who is refusing to commit to a new deal at the Red Bull Arena.

Werner’s stock has skyrocketed since he joined RB Leipzig from boyhood club Vfb Stuttgart in the summer of 2015. The transformation in his career is thanks in large part to manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, who started deploying the player as a striker instead of a winger, as he was during his Stuttgart days.

The change in position has slowly made Werner a prolific powerhouse, scoring 37 goals in 61 outings, in addition to 11 assists. The 21-year-old has also cemented his place in the German National Side, having scored seven goals in his first ten international appearances, and it is no surprise that some of the best clubs in the world are eyeing him now.

The latest in his pursuit are Arsenal, who seem intent on bolstering attack further even after making reinforcements in the January transfer window. The Gunners added Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Arsene Wenger’s squad, which already had the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette.

The North London club have now set their sights on Werner, having had him monitored in Leipzig’s Europa League tie against Napoli this week, where he struck two goals. The interest in Werner though, comes as a bit of a surprise, considering the Arsenal boss already has two top class strikers at his disposal.

But, the Gunners could also deploy the player as a winger, considering he used to play in the wide areas during his youth football days as well as the early senior footballing career. Either way, Arsenal would have an exciting and prolific young player on their hands, should Werner make the move in the summer.

The German international also seems to be open to a move away from Red Bull Arena, having previously asserted that he is happy at Leipzig. The report though, suggests that Werner has rejected a new deal at the East German club, paving the way for a possible switch to Arsenal in the summer.

He won’t come cheap though, with Leipzig likely to command a fee of at least £50 million in exchange for his services. It now remains to be seen if Arsenal would be willing to shell out the amount, and if they are joined by other clubs in pursuit of Werner in the summer.
