Real Madrid are reportedly interested in AS Roma keeper Alisson and are ready to rival Liverpool in the summer pursuit of the Brazilian.

If reports from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo are to be believed, Liverpool are set to face competition from Real Madrid in the summer in pursuit of AS Roma keeper Alisson. The Brazilian has been on the radar of Liverpool for a while. But, the Reds seem to now have a battle at hand, with Real Madrid entering the fray for the AS Roma custodian.

Reports suggest that Liverpool had even attempted to bring the goalkeeper in during the January transfer window itself, despite Roma Sporting director Monchi stating that there were no January bids for the keeper.

Alisson has been in quite some form for AS Roma this season, with a total of 12 clean sheets in 28 games so far in all competitions, conceding just 23 goals at an average of around 0.82 goals per game. It is this consistency that has seen AS Roma qualify for the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League while also competing for a place in the top four on the Serie A table.

Alisson has been linked with Liverpool for a while now. Liverpool have had a great deal of trouble, as far as the goalkeeping department is concerned. The arrival of Loris Karius was meant to remedy the errors. But, the German has not performed well enough to warrant the tag of the undisputed first-choice keeper at Anfield, with Simon Mignolet himself having a highly inconsistent season so far.

In such a scenario, a move for the 25-year-old does make sense. The Brazilian, if he does arrive and is a hit at Anfield, could guard the goal for the next decade or so, which is where Real Madrid come into the picture.

Los Blancos, themselves, have seen Keylor Navas be highly inconsistent this season, with second-choice Kiko Casilla not deemed good enough to take over permanently as the first-choice at Real Madrid. The reports suggest Zinedine Zidane did not want the club to continue their pursuit of Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has ended up signing a new deal at Athletic Bilbao.

Thus, the need for a new keeper is paramount at the Bernabeu, and with Thibaut Courtois and David De Gea seemingly no closer to switching loyalties, Alisson has emerged as a target for Real Madrid.

Ideally, with the January transfer window now over, Real Madrid would like to wait till the World Cup before making their decision as some of their higher-priority targets in the same position could become available after the FIFA World Cup 2018 in the summer.

As far as Alisson’s future is concerned, it does look like he is ready to take the next step in his career and the Brazilian could be set to join a giant in a top league in the summer, be it Real Madrid, Liverpool or some other outfit.
