Chelsea are reportedly plotting a January bid for Russian midfielder Aleksandr Golovin and are ready to pay £15 million to sign the CSKA Moscow star.

According to The Sun, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wants to deal in Russian midfielder Aleksandr Golovin as soon as possible. The CSKA Moscow star is being eyed by the Blues as a potential January target, with the aim of snapping him up before an increase of interest in his services.

Aleksandr Golovin emerged from the CSKA Moscow youth setup before taking the Russian Premier League by storm, representing CSKA Moscow’s senior side. A workhorse by nature, the player has already amassed 28 appearances this season alone, with 3 goals and 4 assists to show for his efforts.

The 21-year-old has become a regular at the international level as well, with 15 appearances to his name. His growing importance within the squad saw CSKA Moscow tie the player down to long-term deal – a contract which does not end before the summer of 2021.

Golovin though, might not stick with the Russian Premier League side for the entirety of his deal, with Chelsea interested in his services. Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich is an admirer of the 21-year-old’s talents and wants to bring him to Stamford Bridge as soon as possible.

Chelsea do seem short on quality and quantity both, in central midfield. Tiemoue Bakayoko has failed to adapt to his surroundings well while Danny Drinkwater has only just taken the initial steps in his Chelsea career, with a long-term injury delaying his debut in a Chelsea shirt for a considerable time.

The recent fixtures have highlighted the need for depth and quality in the said position and come January, there is an air of expectancy around Stamford Bridge, as far as reinforcements are concerned.

Golovin might be na ideal target. The player has been lauded for his work-rate and his ability to open up space for his teammates to use – an underrated quality in a central midfielder. Golovin might also be useful in a makeshift role as a wing-back if the need does arise, considering his ability to play out wide.

The report entails that Chelsea are ready to shell out as much as £15 million for the 21-year-old, a fee which might tempt CSKA Moscow. January transfer windows though, are often tough and we could very well see the fee rise a bit higher as well, if Chelsea become desperate to do a deal in January itself.

It is still unknown whether Chelsea will be willing to loan the player back for the rest of the season or not – a perk that might just convince the Russian giants to agree to the transfer.
