Manchester United have reportedly established contact with Luka Modric over a potential move, with his future at Real Madrid uncertain.

According to a report by Spanish publication Don Balon, Luka Modric’s future at Real Madrid is up in the air. The Croatian midfielder might, thus, be open to a move away from Santiago Bernabeu, with Manchester United eyeing a possible move next summer.

Modric has been regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world for a long time, and has been an instrumental figure for Real Madrid since making the switch from Tottenham in the summer of 2012.

Orchestrating play from the centre of the park, the player has, in fact, played a pivotal role in the unprecedented success that Los Blancos have achieved over the last four years. In all, Modric has made 227 appearances for Los Blancos, with a return of 11 goals and 33 assists to show for his efforts.

His role, though, could be reduced upon the eventual return of Gareth Bale, with Zinedine Zidane looking to give another run to the BBC to solve their goalscoring woes. In fact, Modric has held showdown talks with the Real Madrid boss to get some clarity over his role, with his future becoming uncertain.

Meanwhile, clubs are starting to line up for the Croatia international, should he call time on his stint at the Bernabeu, with Manchester United already establishing contacts with his entourage over a possible move next summer.

The Premier League heavyweights have been long-time admirers of the veteran midfielder, having also tried to land him before he made his way to the Spanish capital in 2012, and could be set to make another move for him soon.

Widespread reports have claimed that Michael Carrick could be set to hang up his boots at the end of the season, making Modric the perfect like-for-like short-term replacement for Jose Mourinho.

The addition of the Croat could also help the Manchester United boss boost his creative options in midfield and give Paul Pogba even more freedom to charge forward in attack. Modric though, is not yet considering his departure from Real Madrid.

However, if his role is indeed reduced in the coming months, he may be forced to consider his future at the Bernabeu, which would put Manchester United in the driver’s seat. Real Madrid might yet ask for a sizeable transfer fee, considering he still has more than two years left to run on his current deal.

It now remains to be seen if the move sees the light of the day, with Manchester United set to launch the offensive for the veteran midfielder next summer.
