Tottenham are reportedly interested in Hoffenheim youngster Nadiem Amiri and are thought to be ahead of RB Leipzig in the race to sign the attacker.

German publication Bild are claiming that Tottenham are ready to step up their interest in Bundesliga regular Nadiem Amiri. The youngster has been able to impress the onlookers with his performances for Hoffenheim and is attracting interest from Tottenham and fellow Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.

Nadiem Amiri is a 21-year-old versatile youngster who has come through the ranks at Hoffenheim. While the player made his debut in the 2014-15 Bundesliga campaign, it was the season that followed which saw Amiri lock down a regular place for himself within the squad.

The player was one of the pillars of Julian Nagelsmann’s side that earned plaudits for their Bundesliga campaign last season, which saw them qualify for a spot in the Qualifying phase for the UEFA Champions League Group Stage draw. And while the club fell to Liverpool in the same, Hoffenheim have continued to look strong in the domestic league at least.

Amiri’s importance in the squad can be digressed from the fact that the 21-year-old has missed just two of the club’s 11 Bundesliga matches thus far, both of which have been due to injuries. Also, the youngster has just been awarded with a new deal by Hoffenheim, one which binds him down till 2020.

The club though, fear they may lose him before the stipulated time of the contract, especially with the likes of RB Leipzig and Tottenham circling. Leipzig’s interest can be stemmed from the summer transfer window combined with the approved transfer of Naby Keita to Liverpool next summer, which is likely to see the club scour for suitable replacements.

Amiri, with his experience in Bundesliga, along with his explosiveness could be the man to replace the Guinean at Leipzig. Tottenham on the other hand, are eyeing the player in order to add depth to their squad at various positions, with the player being able to play on the left side of the wing and as a central midfielder along with his preferred position – the attacking midfield.

Tottenham need to add a left winger to the squad while injuries to Mousa Dembele and others have seen Pochettino put his faith in Harry Winks, who has earned some praise for his performance against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

Still, the need for addition is paramount and Amiri, with his ability to act as a cover for all three positions could just be the option. The 21-year-old also matches the recruiting philosophy of the club and would also fit in seamlessly into the youthful squad.

Tottenham do lead Leipzig in the race, with Spurs continuously scouting the player, the latest being in an Under-21 international between Germany and Azerbaijan. But, with both the clubs looking to wait till the summer, there could be several twists in the pursuit.

Other clubs might take note of Amiri’s performances or either or both of the teams could look at other more achievable targets in due course. For now though, Amiri looks like a prospect that is expected to stir up quite a lot of interest in his services come summer, 2018. And Spurs appear to be one of the main horses in the race to snap up the talented German.
