Real Madrid are reportedly ready to pay up to €80 million in order to secure a January deal to bring PSG superstar Marquinhos to Santiago Bernabeu.

According to Spanish publication Diario Gol, Real Madrid are preparing to launch a January assault on PSG for one of their Brazilian jewels. The player in question is Marquinhos, who is being eyed by Florentino Perez and the Real president is ready to bid upto €80 million to land the Brazilian in January.

Indeed, the need for reinforcements at the back for Real Madrid has become paramount. The defence has been leaky at best and Zinedine Zidane has been having to continuously chop and change due to injuries and lack of depth in the said area. Marquinhos could serve two purposes if he were to arrive at the Bernabeu.

The central defence has been weakened by continuous injuries to Raphael Varane while the likes of Nacho and Jesus Vallejo have not exactly set the stage alight with their defensive acumen. The right-back slot though, is an even bigger cause for worry. Daniel Carvajal’s mysterious infection has seen him be unavailable for an indefinite period of time.

While Achraf Hakimi has stepped up and looked the part while doing so, Zidane still bemoans a calmer and more experienced head on the right side of the defence. Marquinhos – a player who is comfortable playing as a centre-back and on the right – would be just what the doctor ordered for Real Madrid.

Marquinhos arrived at PSG in the summer of 2013 amidst much hype surrounding his talent. The Brazilian had a strong debut season at Parc des Princes and has built upon it with even stronger campaigns to follow the debut. He has always been linked with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Real Madrid though, seem to be in dire need of reinforcements in the said position. A deal in January is being contemplated by Los Blancos. While Real can wait till the summer, it could be a huge blow to their chances of tasting much success this season, especially in La Liga, where they have already fallen off the pace.

Hence, January could be the opportune time for Real. However, Marquinhos will be ineligible to represent Real in Europe for the season, having played for PSG in the Champions League. It will be interesting to see if Zidane is willing to accept the trade-off in order to bolster his backline, at least for the domestic competitions.
