Barcelona will reportedly complete the signing of Yerry Mina in January if Thomas Vermaelen departs from Camp Nou in the winter transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish publication Sport, Barcelona could accelerate Yerry Mina’s arrival from Palmeiras, and bring him to Camp Nou in January, if Thomas Vermaelen exits the club in the winter transfer window.

Yerry Mina has long been regarded as one of the most promising young centre-backs in the world, and has been impressive since joining Palmeiras from Santa Fe in 2016. In fact, the player took no time to establish himself at the heart of defence for the Brazilian giants, although his involvement has been restricted by a spate of injuries.

In all, Yerry Mina has made 27 appearances for Palmeiras, proving to be a dependable presence at the back while also being a healthy contributor to his team’s cause, having scored six goals for his side. He is also a full-fledged member of the Colombian National Side.

His exploits in South America have made the 23-year-old a popular figure in Europe, with several top clubs making a beeline for him. However, Barcelona have won the race to sign him, with the La Liga heavyweights having an option to buy him for €9 million.

The Blaugrana enjoy a fantastic professional relationship with Palmeiras, having also secured the deal for Vitinho this past summer. As per various reports Mina appeared set to complete his switch to Camp Nou next summer. But, the latest report by Sport suggests otherwise.

Thomas Vermaelen is being heavily linked with a move away from Barcelona, with a January exit on the cards. If the struggling Belgian defender indeed decides to call time on his stint at Camp Nou in the winter transfer window, Ernesto Valverde will be left with Gerard Pique, Samuel Umtiti and Javier Mascherano as his only recognised options.

Therefore, Barcelona are keeping the option of completing Yerry Mina’s move in January. The Colombian’s arrival in the winter transfer window could boost Valverde’s options immensely, especially with Pique blowing hot and cold at the start of the season.

Any early move though, hinges on the exit of Vermaelen, as per the report, and it remains to be seen if the Belgian defender departs from Camp Nou for Barcelona to complete the signing of Yerry Mina in January.
