Mesut Ozil is reportedly inching closer towards sealing a sensational move to Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Manchester United.

According to a report in Daily Mirror, Mesut Ozil is edging towards a controversial switch to Manchester United. The German playmaker has told his teammates at Arsenal that he will move to Old Trafford, and is set to snub a new deal with the Gunners.

Ozil has been a pivotal figure in Arsenal’s fortunes since making a £42.5 million move from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013. Widely regarded as one of the best playmakers in the world, the player has provided the more assists (45) than any player in the Premier League since 2013.

His form since the start of 2016-17 season has been uncharacteristically poor, with Ozil only managing 12 goals and 14 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions – an underwhelming return by his lofty standards in campaigns gone by.

While his poor form has reflected in the Gunners’ fortunes as well, the Arsenal hierarchy and fans have been further exasperated by the German’s reluctance to ink a new deal at the club, despite being offered a mammoth £275,000-a-week deal.

The report claims that Ozil’s representatives have been asking for a staggering contract worth £350,000 per week to sign the dotted line. But, the player has his heart set on departing from the Emirates to make the controversial move to Manchester United.

In fact, Ozil has already told his teammates that he’ll sign with the club, with recent reports also claiming that his entourage has sent out feelers over a possible switch to Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Manchester United are believed to be considering a Bosman move for the player as well, with Jose Mourinho a huge admirer.

Ozil has also attracted interest from clubs outside England, with Inter Milan in particular, publicly confirming their intentions of making a move for him. However, the player’s agent Dr. Erkut Sogut has claimed that his client is eager to remain in the Premier League for a few more years.

Thus, Manchester United will have a distinct advantage if they decide to pursue a move for him. Arsenal, meanwhile, could end up selling the 29-year-old in January if the impasse between the two parties continue, with Arsene Wenger confirming that there is a possibility that the player could depart in the winter transfer window.

As far as Manchester United are concerned, while Mourinho will be adding another playmaker in Ozil despite the presence of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata, signing a player of the Germany international’s quality will be nothing short of coup for the Red Devils.

It now remains to be seen if Manchester United launch the offensive for Ozil, either in January or next summer, with the player eager to make the move to Old Trafford.
