Giorgio Chiellini is reportedly in talks with Juventus over a new deal, and the two parties are close to reaching agreement over the renewal

According to a report in Italian publication Calciomercato, Giorgio Chiellini is set to sign an extension on his current contract with Juventus, that is set to expire at the end of the season. Chelsea were interested in signing the Italian defender in the summer transfer window.

Chiellini joined Juventus from Fiorentina, who had co-ownership of the defender with the Bianconeri, in 2005, and the player has been a pillar at the back for the club. A mainstay in defence for both club and country for well over a decade now, the veteran Italian has been an instrumental figure for Juve as well as Italy.

The no-nonsense, hard-tackling Chiellini has amassed close to 450 appearances for Juventus, while also being close to notching up 100 outings for Italy. The player has also won 12 major trophies with the Serie A giants, including the last six Italian top flight titles.

Having played a major role in Juventus boasting one of the most formidable defensive units for the better part of the last half a decade, Chiellini is a player who has been highly sought-after in the transfer market, with some of the biggest clubs in Europe making a beeline for his signature.

But, Chelsea have tried to secure his services in the last two summer transfer windows with Antonio Conte, who has previously worked with Chiellini at Juventus and Italy, being a huge admirer of the player’s talents.

It is still unknown if Conte tried signing the 33-year-old before or after he secured the services of Antonio Rudiger. But, the arrival of the German defender, alongside the rise of Andreas Christensen seems to have provided stability at the back at Stamford Bridges.

Therefore, Chelsea are unlikely to make another attempt for Chiellini in a future transfer window, unless a centre-back is offloaded. Nevertheless, Juventus are keen on tying the player up to a new deal at the Allianz Stadium, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Talks are already underway between the club and the player, with Juventus expected to match the Italy international’s terms. The duration of the new deal, as well as a few other details are yet to be chalked out, but the renewal seems to be imminent, with Chiellini keen on ending his career at Juventus.
