Real Madrid are reportedly eyeing a deal to sign Timo Werner in January, with Bayern Munich interested in the RB Leipzig striker as well.

According to a report by Spanish publication Don Balon, Timo Werner is attracting interest from Real Madrid, who are set to make a move for him in the winter transfer window. Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich are also weighing up a move for the RB Leipzig striker.

Werner’s career has been on a steadily upward trajectory ever since he joined Leipzig from boyhood club Vfb Stuttgart last summer. A winger during his Stuttgart days, the player was deployed as a striker by Leipzig boss Ralph Hasenhuttl – a role that he has taken to with aplomb, becoming a prolific powerhouse.

Last season, Werner was among the top scorers in Bundesliga, finding the back of the net 21 times and leading Leipzig to a shock runners-up finish. He subsequently played a key role in Germany’s triumphant Confederations Cup run, finishing as the joint-top scorer, with 3 goals.

His exploits have seen the player being regarded as one of the most exciting young prospects in Europe, and some of the most prominent names in the continent are starting to show an interest in him. Among these, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are reported to be the front-runners vying for his signature.

Robert Lewandowski’s future at Bayern is up in the air after he recently questioned the club’s ambitions. With widespread reports suggesting that the Polish striker is likely to make his way out of Allianz Arena next summer, Carlo Ancelotti could delve into the market for a striker.

But, they could be forced into action earlier than expected, with Real Madrid keen on recruiting the player in the winter transfer window.

At the Bernabeu, Zinedine Zidane has publicly asserted the need for another striker in his squad, having failed to fill up the void left by the departure of Alvaro Morata to Chelsea. With Karim Benzema struggling to perform consistently, the need for a top striker has accentuated.

Therefore, Werner has emerged as the number one agenda for Real Madrid, with Zidane and Florentino Perez considering a January move for him. The player’s addition could be vital in the second half of the season as a solution to the goalscoring woes that seem to be plaguing Los Blancos currently.

The report suggests that Werner is likely to seek pastures anew sooner or later to contend for major trophies. So, it remains to be seen if Real Madrid succeed in their pursuit of the 21-year-old, or if Bayern manage to poach him away from Leipzig.
