Diego Simeone has signed a two-year contract extension with Atletico Madrid, the club has confirmed in an official statement

Atletico Madrid have made an official statement to confirm that Diego Simeone has committed his future to the club by signing a two-year extension on his current deal. The Argentine is now set to remain with Los Rojiblancos till June 2020.

Simeone is one of the rare breed of player-turned-managers who can boast of widespread success in their playing as well as coaching careers. The 47-year-old won ten major trophies at the club and international levels, including the La Liga and Serie A titles.

His foray into a managerial career has been just as successful, enjoying a steady start initially in Argentina before eventually moving to Spain. A return to Racing Club was short lived as he joined Atletico Madrid midway through the 2011-12 season, with the club’s season threatening to go spiralling out of control.

But, the Argentine, who was a revered figure at Vicente Calderon during his two spells as a player at the club, had an immediate impact on their fortunes as they famously went on to win the Europa League, beating Athletic Bilbao in the final.

Since then, the 2016-17 season is the only one in which he has failed to deliver a title as the Atletico Madrid boss, managing Los Rojiblancos to one of their most successful periods. His honours with the club include a famous La Liga triumph in the 2013-14 season, in addition to a Copa del Rey title, the UEFA Super Cup and the Spanish Super Cup.

During his near six-year spell at the club, Atletico have transformed from mere Top 4 contenders to challenging for the La Liga title on a regular basis while also being consistent performers in the UEFA Champions League.

However, there was growing uncertainty surrounding his situation at the club after Simeone confirmed last year that he had had his contract with Atletico shortened by two years. Since then, he had been heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan at the end of the 2017-18 season.

However, all the speculation has now been put to rest, with Atletico announcing that Simeone has extended his contract by two years, back to its original length. His deal at the club is now set to end in June 2020. With El Cholo committing two more years to Atletico, the club and the fans would be hoping for continued success under the Argentine.
