Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed a new contract with the Red Devils, which will keep him at Old Trafford until the end of the season, the club announced on Thursday

After being released by the club in June, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed a new one-year deal with the club owing to his speedy recovery from injury, as confirmed by the club in an official statement.

Ibrahimovic arrived at Old Trafford on a free transfer at the start of the 2016/17 season, but the Swedish striker’s season ended prematurely after suffering a knee ligament injury that was supposed to keep him out until early 2018. However, the 35-year old went under the knife in the United States this summer, and is expected to return at the end of this calendar year.

Ibrahimovic’s surgeons in Pittsburgh and Manchester United’s fitness staff have to be given massive credit for his timely recovery. If not for them, the former Barcelona man probably wouldn’t have played for the Red Devils again, since the club had made it clear that a new contract would depend entirely on Zlatan’s fitness.

Zlatan took the Premier League by storm in his first season at Old Trafford, scoring 28 goals in 46 games throughout, including 17 in the league. His injury kept him from playing in the Europa League final against his former club Ajax, but was the pivotal figure throughout the season which saw United lift two trophies.

Manchester United have signed Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic in the summer and both players have immediately shown impact, helping United to successive 4-0 wins in the opening two weeks of the Premier League. However, Jose Mourinho will know the importance of having depth in his squad, since he will have one eye on the Champions League this season.

Lukaku is expected to be Mourinho’s first choice center-forward, since the Belgian offers both pace and power. But Mourinho’s young Manchester United side might find themselves in a predicament at some stage, and the colossal presence of Ibrahimovic is a dream for any manager to have up his sleeve in such situations.

With the re-signing on Ibrahimovic, Manchester United probably have the best squad in the country, and are well on their way to winning the title that has eluded them since 2013.
