Chelsea have reportedly decided to end their pursuit of Grzegorz Krychowiak, setting their sights elsewhere for a midfield recruitment

According to a report in French publication L’Equipe, Grzegorz Krychowiak was the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues, though, have ended their pursuit of the PSG midfielder, setting their sights elsewhere for midfield reinforcements before the transfer window slams shut.

Krychowiak has experienced a spectacular fall from grace, going from one of the most highly sought-after holding midfielders in Europe last summer, when he joined PSG from Sevilla, to a peripheral figure at Parc des Princes.

Featuring in a mere 19 games in all competitions last season, with a majority of them coming from the bench, the player failed to create any sort of impact whatsoever despite continuing under Unai Emery, albeit at a different club.

With the likes of Thiago Motta, Adrien Rabiot, Marco Verratti and Blaise Matuidi, who is also being heavily linked with a summer exit from Parc des Princes, all ahead of him in the pecking order, Krychowiak looks set to call time on his spell at PSG, just twelve months after moving to the French capital.

PSG, too, are desperate to offload him as they attempt to balance their books to stray clear of Financial Fair Play troubles, following their astronomical deal for Neymar earlier this month. Hence, they are looking to sell several fringe players, Krychowiak being one of them.

The report suggests that Chelsea were one of the clubs who were showing a keen interest in the player, asking PSG about his availability this summer. But, Les Parisiens were rather unresponsive to the Blues’ approach, forcing the Premier League champions to set their turn their attention towards alternative targets.

Antonio Conte is believed to be eager to make a midfielder his fourth summer signing, despite the arrival of Tiemoue Bakayoko. With Nemanja Matic joining Manchester United, and a potential squad player in Nathaniel Chalobah moving to Watford, the Chelsea boss has just three recognised options at his disposal at the centre of the park.

Therefore, the Italian manager has been scouring for potential additions in midfield in recent weeks, with the likes of Radja Nainggolan and Danny Drinkwater the other rumoured targets. With PSG not bothered to respond to their enquiries, Chelsea are now exploring alternative options.

With Chelsea set to compete on four fronts this season, the Blues have an alarmingly thin squad, especially in midfield and wing-back areas. Thus, it remains to be seen if Conte is able to strengthen in the areas before the transfer window slams shut, or is forced to make do with his current options.
