Chelsea are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater and are discussing a move with the club

According to a report by Daily Mail, Chelsea are continuing to discuss a deal for Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater. The Blues have been linked with the Englishman for a while now but it is understood that Leicester are hesitant to sell an integral part of their squad.

Last summer, N’Golo Kante completed a sensational move to join Chelsea and Leicester have been struggling without the midfielder. Losing Drinkwater as well could plunge the Foxes further into their already-increasing troubles right ahead of the new season.

The fact that Nemanja Matic has joined Manchester United will only further accentuate Chelsea’s need for more depth in midfield, thus making Drinkwater an ideal target. Although Chelsea have already splurged on a deal for Tiemoue Bakayoko from AS Monaco, Conte is keen on adding more depth to midfield.

Drinkwater signed a new four-year contract with Leicester City only last summer but Conte is quite determined to sign the midfielder and it will come as no surprise if he does manage to clinch a deal.

The England international was a part of Leicester City’s Premier League-winning squad in 2015/16. While that season proved to be miraculous for the club, 2016/17 was simply underwhelming for the club as well as Drinkwater. His performances lacked conviction and he was merely average on several occasions.

However, he did partner exceptionally well with Kante at the King Power Stadium in 2015/16. Ever since Kante joined Chelsea, he has proven to be a rock in the midfield area and it is likely that Drinkwater could do well again at Stamford Bridge with Kante by his side.

Thus, a move for Drinkwater can strengthen Chelsea’s midfield further with the player forging a proven and strong partnership at the heart of midfield in the past. Furthermore, if the deal goes through, this could be a good move for Drinkwater since he will be making a step up to one of the best clubs in Europe.

Although Leicester improved their form under Craig Shakespeare, Chelsea can provide a lot more for Drinkwater to further his career, and a deal could be a good chance for the player.
