Chelsea are reportedly interested in a big money summer swoop for Manchester City star striker Sergio Aguero in an attempt to strengthen their attack

According to a tweet by the official handle of Sky Sports, Chelsea are considering a move to sign Sergio Aguero from Manchester City after losing out on Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United.

Sergio Aguero is clearly one of the best strikers in the Premier League but he has had a rather topsy-turvy time at the Etihad ever since Pep Guardiola took charge of Manchester City. In fact, Aguero is the undisputed best when it comes to minutes per goal since he has scored 122 at a rate of one every 109.8 minutes.

Despite being as lethal as he is, he lost his place last season to 20-year-old Gabriel Jesus as the youngster cemented a place for himself in the front line. Jesus stormed ahead to justify Guardiola’s selection, before succumbing to injury only to return with just the same explosive impact.

However, it does seem a bit odd that a tactician like Guardiola would allow a player of Aguero’s calibre to join one of their strongest Premier League rivals. Even if he is no longer a part of the manager’s plans, it does seem unlikely that the former Barcelona boss will let Aguero join last season’s champions.

The only way they might let that happen is if they manage to secure the signing of another striker. City have been linked with Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal for months now and it is quite possible that Aguero will be allowed to depart only if they sign a deal with another top striker.

Be that as it may, it might not be the ideal decision for Aguero to stay back at City regardless of how things progress in the transfer window. He is already facing a lot of competition from Gabriel Jesus and that will only intensify if they manage to sign Sanchez as well. Aguero needs to clock more playing time and an exit seems to be the only way.

Chelsea’s interest in Aguero will prove to be crucial since he will be moving to an equally strong – if not stronger – team and also get regular playing time since Diego Costa is expected to leave this summer and Antonio Conte will need a quality goal-scorer up front.

The 29-year-old would provide a lethal focal point to create something out of the chances put up by Eden Hazard or Pedro. It remains to be seen if the deal will go through but if it does, Aguero is likely to have a better chance at clocking regular minutes at Stamford Bridge.
