Chelsea are reportedly on the verge of signing Antonio Rudiger this summer, having agreed a £34.2 million deal with AS Roma for the German defender

According to a report in Daily Mail, Chelsea are set to complete the summer signing of Antonio Rudiger from AS Roma. The Premier League champions have struck an agreement with the Giallorossi over a £34.2 million deal for the German centre-back.

Rudiger’s career has taken off considerably since he joined Roma from Vfb Stuttgart in the summer of 2015. Having been widely regarded as one of the most promising defenders in Europe when he joined the Roman club, the player has been well on course to justify his billing, going from strength to strength at Stadio Olimpico.

What’s more impressive is the way Rudiger shrugged off a gruesome knee injury that forced him to miss Euro 2016 to slowly bounce back to top form over the course of the 2016/17 season. In all, the 24-year-old made 36 appearances in all competitions for Roma, providing a reliable presence at the back.

Rudiger also got the opportunity to represent Germany in a major international competition, and he was one of the key figures for Die Mannschaft as they won the Confederations Cup. The player is now set to take the next step in his club career, with Chelsea on the verge of signing him this summer.

He is also desperate to leave Italy after being on the receiving end of racial abuse on several occasions. And Antonio Conte has offered Rudiger an escape route out of the country to be the central defensive reinforcement that he has reportedly been in search of in the summer transfer window.

The Chelsea boss is keen to bolster his side’s defensive options with the Blues set to compete on four fronts next season. With Conte’s system reliant on building up play from the back, Rudiger’s abilities on the ball makes him a viable target.

Thus, the Premier League champions have been engaged in discussions with the player over a possible move in the summer transfer window, and have now taken the next step in negotiations after agreeing a £34.2 million deal with Roma.

The deal includes a transfer fee worth £30.7 million plus £3.5 million in add ons. It now remains to be seen if Chelsea are able to agree personal terms with the player soon in order to chalk in the remaining details of the transfer.
