Manchester United have reportedly joined Liverpool in the race to sign Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham in the summer

According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Manchester United have set their sights on Ryan Sessegnon and are keen on landing the Fulham wonderkid. The Red Devils have joined Liverpool in pursuit of the 16-year-old left-back.

Sessegnon has emerged as one of the most exciting prospects in England, rapidly progressing through the ranks at boyhood club Fulham before establishing himself in the senior setup at the nascent age of 16.

Already a mainstay in defence, Sessegnon has made the left side of defence his own and has become one of the most important members for Fulham in their bid to secure promotion to the Premier League. The teenager has racked up the numbers, playing 30 times in all competitions and making an impact on both ends of the pitch.

Sessegnon has not only been solid and promising at the back but has also chipped in with seven goal and five assists – a superb return for any player, let along someone who is still in his teens. That’s why it’s not surprising that he is already attracting the attention of some of the biggest clubs in England.

Liverpool have been linked the most heavily with Sessegnon, with recent reports suggesting that the Reds are set to make a move for him in the summer. The Merseyside club are also ready to offload the underperforming Alberto Moreno, who has failed to make much impact at Anfield in the last two seasons.

That leaves Jurgen Klopp with just James Milner, who has done well in a makeshift left-back role but is on the wrong side of 30. Thus, Milner can take Sessegnon under his wings who can eventually take over at left-back once the veteran Englishman calls time on his Liverpool career.

But, the Reds will not have it easy in pursuit of Sessegnon, with Manchester United also joining the race to sign him in the summer. In fact, the Red Devils have made enquiries about the 16-year-old and are now trying to race clear in the lead in his chase.

Luke Shaw has been battling poor form and fitness issues all through the season and his future at Old Trafford is uncertain. In his stead, the likes of Darmian, Ashley Young, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind have all been deployed as left-back, but none of them have managed to make a consistent impact.

Thus, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been scouting several options to add for the left side of his team’s defence, with Sessegnon emerging as the latest target. And they may hold a slight edge over Liverpool in that they can potentially offer more first-team football if Shaw leaves the club in the summer.

Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham are also interested in signing Sessegnon in the summer, but it remains to be seen if they can land him. For now, the two most successful clubs in England are the front runners to sign the teenager, set to go head-to-head in his pursuit in the summer.
