Manchester United are believed to be preparing a £40 million summer bid for Tottenham’s defensive stalwart Eric Dier in the summer

According to Neil Ashton of the Sun, Manchester United are looking prepare a bid in the region of £40 million to bring Tottenham Hotspur’s defender-cum-defensive midfielder to Old Trafford in the summer.

Dier has been an exceptional cog in the Spurs team this season, playing primarily as a defender, but he is seen as a potential replacement to the long-serving United midfielder Michael Carrick.

The Englishman is set to turn 36 in June, and is unlikely to sign an extension to his contract that runs out in the summer. The club have already arranged for his testimonial, and all signs now point towards him walking out of the door at Old Trafford.

Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is understood to be a long-term admirer of Dier, and his versatility will certainly come in handy as United look to challenge for the Premier League next season and probably put up a fight for the Champions League, should they manage to qualify.

The Spurs man is an adept passer of the ball, and has the ability to the pull the strings from midfield. Also, with Tiemoue Bakayoko likely to move to Chelsea, Dier may now be United’s best pick for a relatively young defensive midfielder.

While the prospect of joining a club like Manchester United could be mouth-watering for any player, Dier would certainly look at the way they end the season before making up his mind. Spurs are all but set to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition, while United are in 5th position.

Also, with chairman Daniel Levy in charge of transfers, he is unlikely to let go of one of his star players to an immediate Premier League rival. That being said, if Dier requests to leave White Hart Lane, Levy is unlikely to settle for anything under £40 million in exchange for his services.

The England international recently put pen to paper to a new deal which has seen him commit his future to the North London outfit until the end of the 20120/21 season. Bayern Munich and Chelsea have also been previously linked to the 23-year-old, and could give United a run for their money should he be placed on the market in the summer.
