Liverpool are confident of signing James Rodriguez from Real Madrid in the summer if they make the Champions League, as per reports.

According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Liverpool are confident that they can land James Rodriguez from Real Madrid in the summer – if they manage to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

James Rodriguez has endured a frustrating 15-month spell since the appointment of Zinedine Zidane at the helm at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Frenchman’s arrival at Real Madrid has seen Rodriguez go tumbling down the pecking order, to be reduced to a bit part role at the club.

The Colombian international has managed to start just seven games in La Liga all season, and despite bagging 2 goals and 5 assists in his limited opportunities chances continue to remain hard to come by.

With his situation not looking likely to improve any time soon, and with his best years in front of him, Rodriguez is believed to be unwilling to continue his misery at Real Madrid, despite insisting recently that his future lies at the Bernabeu.

And if recent reports are to be believed, there will be no shortage of suitors making a beeline to sign Rodriguez in the summer. In fact, the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, AC Milan and Bayern Munich have all been linked with the 25-year-old and they are set to be joined another European giants.

Liverpool have now entered the race to sign Rodriguez in the summer and the report by the Mirror states that the Reds have, in fact, been long-time admirers of the Colombian’s talents. The Merseyside club tried to bring Rodriguez last summer as well, before they were rebuffed in their attempts.

However, they believe that they have a stronger case going into the transfer market this time around, with Rodriguez clearly falling out of favour with Zidane at Real Madrid. In fact, Liverpool have already made contact with Los Blancos over the prospect of signing the player in the summer.

It will be an interesting signing by Liverpool, because Rodriguez doesn’t exactly fit the system that has been implemented by Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. But he brings certain qualities to the table that are currently missing from the Reds’ attack.

Additionally, the possible acquisition of Rodriguez would be a statement signing by Liverpool and Klopp, who has been urged to bolster his attack for a long time now. However, a possible stumbling block in their pursuit of the Colombian could be the €75 million price tag that Real Madrid are believed to be asking for.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool are willing to shell out such a considerable sum for Rodriguez, and Champions League qualification will hold key too, but for now they appear to be leading the race to sign him in the summer.
