Real Madrid are interested in signing Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso this summer, according to reports

According to Marca, despite the signing being “practically mission impossible,” Real Madrid will still attempt to sign Marcos Alonso from Chelsea this summer as they look to strengthen their squad.

Marca claim that the Real Madrid hierarchy are admirers of Alonso and are “well aware of his talents,” but that they are also aware that he may prove far too difficult to sign this summer after only joining Chelsea from Fiorentina last summer in a €22 million deal.

They also state that Madrid have had opportunities to sign Alonso in the past but at the time instead chose to extend the contract of Fabio Coentrao, possibly because Alonso was still an unproven quantity at the time.

That is no longer the case, as Alonso has been a revelation at left wing-back for Chelsea this season and has excelled in new manager Antonio Conte’s much-acclaimed 3-4-3 system along with Victor Moses, who has also benefited from the change in formation.

Alonso had previously spent time in England, first with Bolton Wanderers from 2010 to 2013 and then with Sunderland for half a season, failing to impress with both teams and eventually departing to Fiorentina.

Alonso actually progressed through Real Madrid’s youth ranks himself and eventually made it to Real Madrid’s B side. He was then handed his debut for the senior side by Manuel Pellegrini but after failing to impress at the Bernabeu, was sold to Bolton Wanderers.

It appears Real Madrid are now intent on bringing back their former player to the Bernabeu and given the 26-year old’s performances for Chelsea this season, it comes as no surprise that top clubs around Europe are keeping tabs on him.

In 23 appearances in the English Premier League for Chelsea, he has picked up 4 goals and 2 assists. His energetic performances have been key to Chelsea’s attacking and defensive stability along with Victor Moses and there is no doubt that the Blues will not want to sell him under any circumstances.

Real Madrid are looking to strengthen their squad and left-back is an area that could use reinforcements. Marcelo has been performing well for Real once again this season but Fabio Coentrao will almost certainly leave at the end of the season.

While Madrid have the financial power to sign any player in the world, Chelsea do not need the money and despite the Blues being linked with a host of other left-backs including Roma’s Emerson, it is very difficult to see them selling the Spaniard to Real Madrid this summer.
