Tottenham have reportedly joined Paris Saint-Germain in the pursuit of frustrated Manchester United superstar Anthony Martial.
Daily Mirror are reporting that Tottenham are showing interest in Manchester United superstar Anthony Martial. The Frenchman has been linked with an exit from Old Trafford after enduring a frustrating time under Jose Mourinho, with PSG the front-runners. And Spurs seem to have renewed their interest in the attacker.
Anthony Martial became an overnight hero at Old Trafford with a goal on his debut, that too against long-standing rivals Liverpool, in an effort that drew comparisons with Thierry Henry. The debut season went perfectly for the Frenchman as he finished the campaign as United’s top goalscorer along with an FA Cup triumph to his name.
But, under Jose Mourinho, he has been frustrated by the lack of chances, despite a return of 7 goals and 6 assists in 22 appearances in all competitions; strong numbers. Martial’s agent’s outspoken nature has also not gone down well with Mourinho, who has backed the Frenchman several times this season, assuring him of his immediate future.
With doubts cast over Martial’s future, Barcelona and Real Madrid, who were linked with him before he signed for Manchester United, were reported to have reignited their interest in the 21-year-old. But, it is Paris Saint-Germain who were reported to be the front-runners for his signature.
A return to France could interest Anthony Martial, for it was in Ligue 1 where he emerged as a future superstar. But, as it now emerges, Tottenham have joined the long list of suitors for Martial. Spurs’ interest, though, is not a new occurrence. They were reported to be interested as well when United grabbed a deadline-day move for Martial.
With Moussa Sissoko failing to lock down a starting spot in the squad, Son Heung-Min has been entrusted with the wide area, a position which could see an immediate upgrade if Tottenham get their hands on Martial.
Tottenham have also been linked with the likes of Demarai Gray and Wilfried Zaha in recent times. But, neither comes close to the reputation Martial possesses. Mourinho, though, has always quashed rumours of the 21-year-old’s future lying elsewhere and his performance in a 2-0 win over the weekend against Watford could turn a new leaf for the attacker.
Hence, we might just see Martial extending his stay at Old Trafford, something the Manchester United fans really want. But, in case it doesn’t work out, the likes of Tottenham and PSG lie in wait to pounce on the opportunity.
