Real Madrid are reportedly ahead of Barcelona in the race to sign highly-rated and in-form Espanyol full-back Aaron Martin

Tribal Football report that Real Madrid and Barcelona are both interested in Espanyol full-back Aaron Martin. The defender has been making waves with his consistent performances in La Liga Santander under Quique Sanchez Flores and could be set for a move to a bigger club in the recent future.

Born in Catalonia, Spain, Aaron Martin Caricol has progressed through the ranks at Espanyol before making the grade at Estadi Comelia-El Prat. Former Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores has entrusted the youngster at the left-back position, and the 19-year-old has responded with aplomb to the manager’s faith in him.

After not featuring in the first four La Liga Santander matches for Espanyol this season, Aaron Martin has featured in the next 14, playing a crucial part as Espanyol recorded 7 shutouts in the aforementioned fixtures. Such has been the player’s form that he has recently penned a new long-term deal in January 2017, extending his stay at the club to potentially 2022.

But as per reports, the 19-year-old might not stay at the club long enough to fulfil the entirety of his new deal. Real Madrid and Barcelona are both credited with interest in the young left-back. Barcelona have recently trumped Real Madrid to Uruguayan defender Santiago Bueno, and Florentino Perez would love to reply with a transfer coup of their own.

As per the report, Zinedine Zidane has made Florentino Perez aware of his desire to add a left-back to the ranks to act as cover to Marcelo, and Aaron Martin has been recommended as a potential addition in the coming transfer window – one who can act as an able back-up at present while also being a credible long-term replacement for the Brazilian.

Barcelona, too, have taken a liking to the 19-year-old talent. The fact that Aaron Martin is born and brought up in the local Barcelona metropolitan region is likely to add more weight behind their interest in the player.

However, Aaron Martin plays for Barcelona’s local rivals Espanyol, who are unlikely to want to let one of their best academy graduates in a while go to their rivals. Also, Real Madrid have a closer relationship with Espanyol.

Aaron Martin’s stock is only going to see an upward trajectory with the rest of the season left before the transfer window reopens. And Real Madrid are primed to land the 19-year-old. The young talent is already showing signs of a future superstar – and he is just getting started.
