Manchester United superstar Paul Pogba has revealed his reasons behind rejoining the Red Devils.
According to French outlet SFR Sport, Pogba also revealed that he rejected interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona in order to return to Old Trafford as he has a special place in his heart for the Red Devils.
Pogba became the world’s most expensive footballer when United signed him from Juventus for £89m in August, despite losing him for peanuts in 2012. The Frenchman left after finding it difficult to break into the first team under manager Alex Ferguson, but has revealed that he always intended to win things with United :
“I came here because I have targets, it’s a big challenge for me,” he said. “I could have also gone to Real Madrid or Barcelona, they were interested. I chose to return, because I had that in my heart. It was my feeling that brought me here. I want to win with Manchester United, I’ve never won with them.”
“I had always said that I would return. I didn’t know when. Because it’s a club that I like a lot. I hadn’t finished, I left because I wanted to play. I hadn’t done what I had wanted to do here. I want United to become the great United again. That’s my challenge here. The fee, I don’t even think about it any more. I came to play football.”
Pogba took some time to settle down after joining United in the summer but is slowly starting to look like the player who left the on-lookers in awe at Juventus. However, he has only picked up 4 goals and 3 assists in 20 Premier League games and given the large fee United spent on him, many expect much more from the 23-year old.
The Frenchman came under heavy criticism for his performance in last night’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford, after putting in what was his worst performance of the season. Pogba was responsible for handing Liverpool a penalty and had no impact on the game whatsoever for United.
However, Jose Mourinho has previously stated that he believes the French international is the best midfielder in the world and he feels that Pogba is capable of winning the Ballon D’or if people stop placing so much importance on goalscorers.
From Pogba’s comments, it is clear that he is completely committed to the United cause given that he has always thought about a return. The fact that he ignored advances from Real Madrid and Barcelona to join the Red Devils will only make it that much sweeter for United fans.
Despite accusations that he is not worth the price tag, it is clear that he is one of the most talented players in the world and it is only a matter of time until he begins to start dominating games in the same fashion he did during his time in Turin.
