Manchester United are reportedly set to trigger the one-year extension clause in David De Gea’s contract, along with an improved salary of more than £200,000 per-week.

The Sun have claimed that David De Gea is set to be the next superstar to be handed a salary bump and a contract extension at Manchester United. The Red Devils are set to trigger a one-year extension clause in the Spaniard’s contract while also rewarding the custodian with a pay upward of £200,000 per-week.

David De Gea has truly been a phenomenon at Old Trafford. After a questionable debut season in the Premier League, Sir Alex Ferguson’s faith in the Spaniard has paid off, with the custodian growing into one of the best goalkeepers on the planet right now.

The indomitable 26-year-old has been named Manchester United’s Player of the season for an unprecedented three consecutive seasons, something which his performances have deserved. Even this season, with Jose Mourinho at the helm, De Gea has shown consistent brilliance exuding class and composure, something which the Portuguese manager has also highlighted.

De Gea has conceded an average of less than one goal per game in the Premier League this season, keeping 7 shutouts in 20 games. Mourinho also pointed towards the Spaniard’s importance in the United setup in the 2-0 win over West Ham United, as the custodian pulled off an important save when the scoreline was 0-0.

It was not too long ago when the player was thought to have one foot out of Old Trafford, with a move to Real Madrid looking imminent. But as fate and a malfunctioning fax machine would have it, De Gea stayed on in Manchester, signing a new four-year deal with an option of a one-year extension at the club’s perusal.

If the Sun’s report is to be believed, Manchester United are set to trigger the one-year clause in his contract, while also rewarding the mega star with a salary bump. Marouane Fellaini has already had his extension option triggered and it seems De Gea is set to be the next one in line.

De Gea, who is currently on a £180,000 per-week, is set to pocket a weekly salary of more than £200,000, something which will not only make him one of the top earners at Manchester United and in the Premier League but also one of the highest paid goalkeepers in the footballing world.

Jose Mourinho has a star-studded squad at his disposal and De Gea looks content and determined to be a part of his Manchester United project, as the Red Devils aim to get back to the top echelons of the Premier League, a place where the iconic club truly belongs.
