Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler believes that the Reds have the edge over Everton ahead of the Merseyside Derby and will prevail when the two teams go head to head on Monday.

Liverpool are set to take on Everton at Goodison Park on Monday, knowing that anything apart from a win will be a poor result as they are looking to keep up the pace with their fellow title contenders.

Playing the last match of the gameweek, the onus will be on the Reds to play catch-up with rather than set the tone for the other top sides in the league. Apart from Arsenal, the other sides in the top six registered comfortable wins.

As if the pressure was not already mounting, Jurgen Klopp’s side now have the added need to come away with maximum points from the Merseyside derby. Despite Everton’s continued improvement over the past few years, they haven’t managed to get the better of their local rivals for the last six seasons, with their last win coming in October 2010.

While it is an old cliche that form goes out of the window on derby day, Liverpool legend and football pundit Robbie Fowler believes that the Reds hold the upper hand ahead of kick-off as recent results have gone in their favour.

Fowler’s former side are unbeaten in their last twelve encounters with their Merseyside rivals, with Liverpool ending up winners on five occasions. The last meeting between the duo saw the Reds end up convincing 4-0 winners. It was also Klopp’s first taste of a derby battle with his new side.

According to clickliverpool, Fowler said, “Liverpool have had a little bit of a sign over Everton over the last few years. The old cliche of form going out the window for derbies hasn’t been the case.

“For five plus years, Liverpool have been the better team on paper going into the game and they have come out on top.

A win for Liverpool could see them leapfrog Manchester City to sit second on the table – six points adrift of leaders Chelsea. The Reds are set to miss the services of attacking wizard Philippe Coutinho and defender Joel Matip, but will be buoyed by the availability of Divock Origi who is expected to pass a late fitness test to start the game on Monday.
