Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who was a pundit for BT Sport’s Champions League coverage on Wednesday, claimed that Aaron Ramsey should be embarrassed by his behaviour during his altercation with PSG striker Edinson Cavani.
Honours were even at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday as two European heavyweights Arsenal and PSG played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in the UEFA Champions League. Olivier Giroud and Edinson Cavani scored for their respective teams, while the unfortunate duo of Alex Iwobi and Marco Verratti slotted the ball into their own nets.
The game produced a number of talking points, and Aaron Ramsey’s skirmish with Cavani was certainly one of them. At the stroke of half-time, as Giroud was gearing up to take the penalty to bring Arsenal back on level terms in the game, Cavani attempted to delay the Frenchman. The incident prompted Ramsey to come to the aid of his Arsenal teammate.
The Welshman was pushed in the chest by the PSG forward as things started to heat up, but instead of moving along with the game, Ramsey appeared to hold his face in pain and signalled to the referee to take action against the Uruguayan.
However, the official was unfazed by the theatrics of the two players and decided to hand a warning rather than a yellow card. This did not end the argument as there seemed to be a few unpleasant exchanges between the two as they headed down the tunnel at the break.
Working as an analyst on BT Sport, Steven Gerrard slammed Ramsey for his reaction. “I think he should be a little embarrassed by that. I thought the Welsh are meant to be tough,” said the former Liverpool captain, according to the Mirror.
Fellow pundit Rio Ferdinand echoed Gerrard’s take on the incident.
“I think there was a bit of over-reacting from Ramsey. I think if he was a foreign player we’d be going mad.”
Iwobi’s own goal in the dying stages now means that Arsenal are unlikely to advance to the knockout stages as group winners due to PSG’s two away goals scored. On the final matchday, the Gunners need to win and must hope that the French side fails to pick up maximum points against Ludogorets if they are to top Group A.
