Manchester United are reportedly preparing to launch an audacious bid for Arsenal superstar Mesut Ozil, who is yet to sign a new contract at Emirates
The Sun are claiming that, as per their sources, Manchester United are set to launch an audacious move for Arsenal superstar Mesut Ozil. The German talisman is yet to agree a new contract at Arsenal, and Manchester United hope to take advantage of the situation and swoop in for the playmaker.
Mesut Ozil has been immense for Arsenal ever since the transfer from Real Madrid. The German maestro notched up an impressive tally of 6 goals and 19 assists in the Premier League last season.
Even though he has recorded only 3 assists in the Premier League and Champions League combined, the 28-year-old has provided a more than decent return of 7 goals in 14 appearances, taking into account both the local and European league.
The former Real Madrid man has less than two years left on his current Arsenal contract and there have been reports of talks being underway for an extension, with the Gunners manager stating his confidence in Ozil’s impending extension.
But, with doubts over Arsene Wenger’s future at the club, there are reports that Mesut Ozil is stalling the contract talks and is waiting for the Frenchman’s future to be settled at the club before he negotiates his own extension.
This has alerted other clubs, with none other than fierce Premier League rivals Manchester United being linked with a move for the German. Jose Mourinho has worked with Mesut Ozil at Real Madrid and is rumoured to hold the German playmaker in high regard, having even gone to the extent of saying that he is the best no.10 in the world.
Manchester United have been searching for a number 10 to replace Wayne Rooney in the lineup and Mesut Ozil would be a more than quality addition to an already star-studded Red Devils roster.
Ozil has been asking for an improved contract after the fall of the British currency following Brexit and Manchester United are unlikely to have any problems in matching the German’s demands. Arsenal may ask for a high transfer fee in order to put off the Old Trafford outfit, but Ed Woodward is unlikely to stop his pursuit, if Jose Mourinho does indeed want Mesut Ozil in Manchester.
The report by Sun also states that Manchester United are willing to offer Ozil wages to the tune of £250,000 per-week, something which eclipses the wages currently being offered by Arsenal as a part of the contract extension, by a mile.
However, it seems unrealistic that Arsene Wenger would let Ozil leave the Arsenal setup, that too for a club like Manchester United which, besides being a rival club, have in Jose Mourinho, a manager with whom Wenger has had many altercations with during the Portuguese’s time at Chelsea, verbal and otherwise.
The rumour may just be used by Mesut Ozil’s representatives to gain a better deal for the German at Arsenal.
It remains to be seen if the rumour develops into something real but right now, it does not seem plausible that Wenger and Arsenal would let Mesut Ozil leave to a rival Premier League club.
