Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that star defender Hector Bellerin will turn down offers from Manchester City and Barcelona to extend his stay at the North London club.
Arsene Wenger has reiterated his belief that Hector Bellerin’s long-term future lies at Arsenal. Speculation regarding the Spaniard’s exit came as a surprise to the Frenchman, who insisted that the player is enjoying his time at the Emirates.
“He [Bellerin] has nearly three years to go, we always try to get the players to the [financial] level where we think they deserve to be,” Wenger is quoted as saying by Metro. “We will try to extend his contract, his long-term future is here.
“He has been absolutely fantastic. His first game was a nightmare. The season before he was at Watford where he didn’t play. His progress has been brilliant because he has absolutely top mental strength.
“He is at a team that meets his needs and values. He came at a very young age. He is an Arsenal player.”
Arsenal fans are certain to breathe a sigh of relief after hearing their manager’s confident words. They spent the entire summer on their edge of their seats, hoping for the defender to commit his future to the club. The likes of Barcelona and Manchester City looked to be in the hunt for the up and coming right-back, but they will now have to look elsewhere.
Recent reports suggested that Bellerin was keen on linking up with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The Spanish manager was in charge of Barcelona during Bellerin’s days at La Masia and a potential reunion looked to be on the cards.
However, Wenger has done a fantastic job to keep hold of his prized asset, and the Gunners are likely to reap high rewards from the Frenchman’s show of faith for years to come. At 21, Bellerin has already established himself as one of the best right-backs in the country and the Spaniard will only improve in the years to come.
