After playing three games in eight days since last week, Jose Mourinho is set to give a number of first-team players a breather for the game against Northampton.
New signing Paul Pogba has endured a difficult time in his second spell at Manchester United. The world’s most expensive player has struggled to cope with the fast-paced and physical nature of life in England and is expected to be given a day for the game against Northampton.
Fellow new signing Eric Bailly has enjoyed a reasonably good start to his United career. Barring the last game against Watford, the Ivorian defensive stalwart has looked one of the better players in the Red Devils setup.
The two have hugely been involved in their side’s games this season and are likely to be rested for the game against Northampton. Goalkeeper David de Gea too will need to catch his breath after playing every minute of Manchester United’s seven games this season.
Sergio Romero, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Memphis and Ashley Young are yet to start for United this season, and could be given the nod in Wednesday’s cup tie. Michael Carrick too his likely to feature in the game, with his last start coming in the Community Shield game against Leicester.
United’s third choice stopper Sam Johnstone is is contention to start between the sticks for United on Wednesday. The young goalkeeper is still to make his debut for the senior side despite feature a number of the youth teams. He is also a part of Mourinho’s 26-man Premier League squad and a game against Northampton could be a platform for him to showcase his exploits.
Jesse Lingard and Axel Tunazube may also feature in the game, but doubts remain whether they will take the field come the opening whistle.
