Arsenal and Leicester are reportedly eyeing a deal for Las Palmas’ holding midfielder Roque Mesa in the upcoming transfer window.

Spanish publication COPE have revealed that Arsenal and Leicester are interested in a move to bring Las Palmas midfielder Roque Mesa to the Premier League. The report added that Las Palmas are keen to keep a hold of the 27-year-old and are trying desperately to agree a contract extension with the player.

Las Palmas have started the current La Liga campaign with a bang, amassing 9 points from their first four games including a 4-2 win over Valencia and currently sit third on the table, level on points with Barcelona and 3 points behind Real Madrid.

Roque Mesa has been involved in each and every minute of their league campaign thus far, and his performance in the role of a holding midfielder has grabbed the attention of the footballing world.

The midfielder boasts a passing percentage of 91.9% in the current campaign and is one of two midfielders who have featured in all 4 games to record a passing success of 90% or above, the other being Real Betis’ Petros (stats via whoscored).

That the player is assured in possession and is an able link between the defence and attack is underlined by the aforementioned statistic.

The 27-year-old was a largely unknown quantity before the current season but his performances in the four games thus far seems to have resulted in a meteoric rise in his value and reputation in the footballing world.

Mesa was rumoured to be on the brink of a move to Sevilla in the summer transfer window with the move ultimately collapsing due to the a lack of agreement between the two clubs over transfer fees.

Mesa’s current deal has a long way to go with the contract due to expire in 2020, but it is the reported presence of a minimum release clause of €30m, as per Football espana, which is likely to be cause for Las Palmas’ desperation of agreeing a new contract with the player.

Only time will tell if the interest from Arsenal and Leicester gets converted into a real offer and whether Mesa is willing to move to the Premier League, with the player having only played his top-flight football in Spain. For now though, the 27-year-old is likely to try and continue his impressive run of performances and contribute to his team’s success as much as possible.
