Italian giants Inter Milan have recently announced a couple of high profile signings in Joao Mario and Gabigol, but they have been unsuccessful in their late approach for Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian.

Inter are looking to become a force to reckon with once again, aided by the Chinese takeover that has brought financial stability to the club. They have brought in Dutch manager Frank de Boer and recently announced the signings of Portuguese Euro 2016 winning midfielder Joao Mario and Brazilian striker Gabigol.

The Nerazzurri were looking to make one more big signing this summer, as they launched a late bid for Manchester United’s 26-year-old full-back Matteo Darmian. However, it looks like the Italian is not going to be heading back to his homeland as the club have refused to enter negotiations with Inter over Darmian, according to the Daily Mail.

The AC Milan academy product played for four Italian clubs before moving to Old Trafford last summer. He would have provided an experienced and low cost solution to De Boer and Inter, with Financial Fair Play restricting them after the big moves for Mario, Gabigol and Antonio Candreva took their summer spending beyond €90 million.

Matteo Darmian impressed the Old Trafford faithful upon his arrival from Torino last summer. However, the Italian endured an injury plagued season and saw his form decline gradually.  It was reported back in June that new manager Jose Mourinho was not too keen on keeping him at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old is currently not part of Jose Mourinho’s starting lineup at United and is finding it difficult to make the bench with the number of talented players in the squad.

Darmian is behind Antonio Valencia in the pecking order for his favoured right-back slot, while academy prospect Tim Fosu-Mensah is also pushing for more game time at full-back. However, Darmian’s versatility will surely be on Jose Mourinho’s mind as he lays out his plans for the season.

The Italian put in some good performances at left-back last season and could be a better option than Ashley Young in that position. However, Luke Shaw is the undisputed first choice and Darmian would probably be better served challenging Valencia for the right-back position.
