Napoli reportedly have set their sights on Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian and want to bring the Italian back to Serie A.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport have revealed that Napoli are preparing a bid for Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian. The report states that the Italian does not feature in Jose Mourinho’s plans at Old Trafford and Napoli have reason to believe Darmian is open to a transfer away from Manchester. The defender joined Old Trafford last season as the club’s only defensive recruit in a deal worth £12.7m but could be set for a move back to Italy with Napoli interested in his services.

The Italian has been consistent for Manchester United the last season, in his 28 league appearances for the club. The defender also scored his debut goal for United in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at the business end of the season. Darmian, though, was largely unconvincing in his performances for Italy in Euro 2016 and missed his spot-kick during the penalty shootout which resulted in the Azzurri being knocked out of the European championships.

This isn’t the first instance of the defender being linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer. Manchester United had reportedly offered Darmian to Chelsea in a deal involving the transfer of Nemanja Matic, but no deal was brokered between the two clubs. There were reports linking Matteo Darmian with a move to Barcelona as the Blaugranes continued to seek Dani Alves’ replacement. The club has since signed Lucas Digne from Paris-Saint Germain and is no longer interested in the Italian.

Napoli have re-emerged to regain their spot as one of the top clubs in Serie A. And with the money received from Gonzalo Higuain’s departure, the Serie A club can easily meet United’s valuation of the defender and the player’s wage demands.

It all boils down to whether Darmian would choose to stay at United and fight for his place in the starting line-up or move back to Italy with Napoli and become an integral part of their squad. The right-back is loved by the fans at Manchester United, who would be hoping Darmian decides to stay and prove to Mourinho that he is worthy of being a starter at Old Trafford.
