Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is keen to reunite with one of his former players at Chelsea, as his future is cast in doubt by the arrival of Italian manager Antonio Conte.

Jose Mourinho has been linked with a number of his former players at Chelsea since his arrival at Old Trafford. Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic is reportedly one of his top targets, while he has also been linked to the Blues’ player of the season last time around Brazilian winger Willian. However, the latest speculation is surrounding a player who came under immense scrutiny for his role in Mourinho’s departure from Stamford Bridge.

Former Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas had a terrible season in 2015-16, right after being a key member of the Premier League winning team the previous season. His poor form fueled rumors that he had a spat with Mourinho, but the Spaniard expressed his regret after the special one left Stamford Bridge and claimed they were still in touch.

Manchester United are now ready to reunite the Portuguese manager with his former player, according to the Mirror. It all depends on his situation with Chelsea though, as United will only act if he is deemed surplus to requirements for incoming manager Antonio Conte.

Conte is reportedly looking to employ a 4-4-2 formation at Stamford Bridge, and he is looking to re-haul the Blues squad to better suit his needs. Chelsea are ready to snap up Leicester City midfielder N’golo Kante, after having been linked to the likes of Radja Nainggolan and Axel Witsel. The former Azzuri manager wants his central midfielders to be physically commanding and energetic.

While Conte admires Fabregas’ creativity and play-making abilities, he is not convinced by the 29-year-old’s athleticism and is unsure whether he will fit into the physically demanding system of play he is planning to implement at Chelsea next season.

Fabregas hasn’t been in the best of form either. He scored 5 and created 7 goals for the Blues in the Premier League last season, a far cry from his 18 assists and 3 goals from their 2014-15 title winning season. That was his debut season at Stamford Bridge, after Jose Mourinho snapped him up from Barcelona for £27 million. Now with his future cast in doubt, the special one might help the Spaniard move on to greener pastures once again.
