Liverpool are linked with a move for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen as the Reds’ are reportedly ready to offer £12M for the former Arsenal player.

The Belgian’s career has been plagued by injuries, which has restricted him to just 14 La Liga appearances for Barcelona since moving from Arsenal in 2014. The 30-year-old is now back to full fitness and is rumored to be considering his future at Nou Camp.

Vermaelen finds himself behind the likes of Javier Mascherano, Gerard Pique and Jeremy Mathieu in the battle for a starting spot at the heart of Blaugranes’ defence. Luis Enrique has now gone on and signed French international Samuel Umtiti from Olympique Lyonnais for a reported fee of €25M. The recent signing is likely to push the Belgian further down the pecking order.

TalkSport have now run a story that according to Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool and Besiktas are ready to offer £12M in a bid to secure the Belgian’s signature. The report states that Thomas Vermaelen is understood to be favoring a move back to the Premier League as he feels he has some unfinished business after his injury-plagued stay at Arsenal. The Reds’, though, would have to battle the Black Eagles who are reportedly ready to match Liverpool’s offer and are even willing to take the 30-year-old on a season-long loan.

Thomas Vermaelen signed for Barcelona after securing a move from Premier League club Arsenal in 2014 in a deal worth around £15M. The Belgian still has 2 years left on his contract with the Catalan club and is looking to move in the search for regular first-team football.

Vermaelen is likely to secure a move away from Barcelona as his chances of getting playing time looks bleak at Nou Camp. His heart seems set for a move back to Premier League and given a choice, he would definitely favour a move to Anfield over Turkish Champions Besiktas.
