However, it won’t be all smooth sailing for Manchester United as they face stiff competition from Juventus for the signature of Andre Gomes. The 22 year-old midfielder is very highly rated by pundits and experts all across Europe as he has the potential to become a world-class player should he be nurtured and groomed properly.

It was not hard to understand why his fellow countryman Jose Mourinho was attracted towards the possibility of signing Andre Gomes as he fulfills many requirements that Manchester United are looking for right now in a summer recruit.

Manchester United have been regularly found out in the heart of midfield for lack of pace, passion, vision and work-rate. With the addition of Andre Gomes, United would be able to successfully plug the gaps in midfield.

In comparison with Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Andre Gomes has a statistical edge. The shots per game for the Manchester United duo in last season were 0.5 and 0.6 shots per game respectively, while Gomes had a shots per game tally of 1.6 .

In terms of dribbling as well, Gomes seems to have an edge over the other two with 1.6 dribbles per game whereas the Manchester duo languish at 0.4 and 0.7 respectively.

Meeting the transfer demands

Valencia press conference

The asking price for Gomes is being quoted at €40million by Valencia, which shouldn’t be a problem for Manchester United with their massive financial backing.

Jose Mourinho has been reportedly given a transfer budget of €200million which could prove decisive in determining the level of quality the Portuguese is able to bring to Old Trafford. Big salary and impressive add-ons are also a big advantage in helping lure players to ply their trade in Manchester. It remains to be seen how swiftly and without fuss Manchester United can seal possibly their first signing of the season.
