John Terry could lose out on a whopping £17 million if he decides to stay at Chelsea instead of taking the lucrative deal from Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning.

Terry’s contract saga has been going on for some time now, with the Chelsea captain announcing earlier this year that this may be his last season at the club. The former England international has maintained throughout that he wants to stay at Chelsea.

Rumours suggested the final decision on Terry’s contract rested with incoming manager Antonio Conte, who is set to take over at the club after the end of Euro 2016 in July. Terry revealed on social media that Chelsea have now offered him a new contract, but also said that it involved a different role for him.

The Chelsea captain currently has a contract that earns him around £6 million per annum. However, the new contract offered to him is set to halve his salary to £3 million a year, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.

China calling?

John Terry will miss out on a huge sum of money if he picks the Chelsea contract over the one offered to him by Chinese club Jiangsu. According to reports, the Chinese club are ready to offer £20 million per year.

Former Chelsea midfielder Ramires had also made the switch from the Premier League to the CSL earlier this year, with Jiangsu reportedly paying him £10 per year. However, Terry is likely to get double the amount if he moves to China. This means that Terry will lose out on £17 million per year if he takes up the Chelsea deal. Is John Terry’s loyalty worth £17 million? Only time will tell.

Terry’s dilema

Arsenal v Chelsea

John Terry has been at the Stamford Bridge for 21 years now, with the fans calling him “Mr Chelsea”. The former England captain has stated his desire to stay at the West London club. However, the pay cut that he might have to take in order to stay at the club is huge.

Now at the age of 35, Terry can still command enormous wages from the CSL clubs, as he is still a regular starter for Chelsea in the Premier League. However, that might not be the case if Terry were to stay at Chelsea for another couple of years and then look for a semi-retirement move to China or the U.S.
