Shkodran Mustafi has endured a fine season in defence for Valencia making 41 appearances for the La Liga outfit.

His performances have attracted the attention of English giants Liverpool with the Reds having reportedly sent an official over to lure the German international to Anfield next season.

According to Dani Merono, a journalist at SuperDeporte, Liverpool officials will hold talks with Valencia CF in the coming days with a view to pen an agreement to secure the German’s transfer to Anfield.

In an interview to Radio Esport Valencia, Dani, citing reliable sources at the club, confirmed, “Liverpool will come this Sunday to see a player at VCF, for Mustafi. They will negotiate because they want to sign him.”

Jurgen Klopp has identified defence as the department that needs maximum reinforcement in the summer and has reportedly set his sights on Mustafi to bring in some much needed stability to a fragile Reds’ back-line. Should Liverpool see the deal through, the German will join Schalke’s Cameroonian center-half Joel Matip among the newcomers at Melwood.

Mustafi has had a good season with Valencia with a bag of performances that should be sufficient to cement his spot in Germany’s Euro 2016 squad. The center-half has won 10 caps for the German national team having made his debut back in 2014.

Mustafi’s potential arrival at Anfield will irk neighbours Everton

The potential move could cause quite a stir across Stanley Park at Everton, with Mustafi having had a stint with the Toffees back in 2009 during the early days in his career. His two years at the club only saw him feature once as a substitute for Everton in a 0-1 Europa League loss to BATE Borisov. He was then sent packing in 2012 to then Serie B outfit, U.C. Sampdoria, in a move explained by David Moyes as “a bid to raise money for bigger transfers”.

The last few months though, have seen a defensive partnership blossoming in the form of Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho, bringing in some much needed cheer for the Reds in that regard. However a UEFA anti-doping violations charge stamped on Mamadou Sakho last week means he is temporarily suspended.

With the Frenchman set to face a lengthy ban should he be proven guilty, Kolo Toure out of contract in the summer and serious doubts about Martin Skrtel’s future at Anfield, it would not be a surprise to see Jurgen Klopp luring Mustafi to Liverpool in a bid to add some German flair to the Reds defence.
