Cristiano Ronaldo sent Real Madrid through to the semi-final of the Champions League with a brilliant freekick that sealed his hat-trick, but insisted that it was not his best performance.

Real Madrid wiped out Wolfsburg’s aggregate lead within the first 20 minutes of the second leg and seemed permanently camped around the Bundesliga side’s penalty area. However, despite the electric start, Los Blancos had to wait till the 77th minute for Ronaldo to complete his hat-trick, giving the home side a 3-2 aggregate lead in the process.

Interestingly, Ronaldo received a crucial bit of advice from his teammate Keylor Navas before he struck his decisive freekick to seal Real Madrid’s passage to the semi-final.

“He [Navas] knows how I can hit the ball on free-kicks and he told me to hit it slowly and that’s what I did,” Ronaldo was quoted as saying by Real Madrid’s official website.

The Portuguese also insisted that it was not one of his best performances for the club, despite his three goals.

“It wasn’t my best performance, I’ve produced better. Just because I scored three goals doesn’t make it my best,” said Ronaldo. “I always give of my best, those who work with me know that, and the stats don’t lie. If you work hard, the goals and assists follow.”

Getting better with age?

Real Madrid vs Wolfsburg

Cristiano Ronaldo does not appear to be losing his goalscoring touch despite his advancing age. While Real Madrid have not been performing as expected of them in the Spanish league, Ronaldo continues to score at superhuman rates, registering 46 goals and 15 assists already this campaign.

In fact, Ronaldo could still win the La Liga-Champions League double if Barcelona and Atletico Madrid slip up in the league. Los Blancos are only four points behind the league leaders currently and a couple of pieces of  silverware this season would further cement his place as one of the all-time greats to have donned the famous white jersey of Real Madrid.
