Corriere dello Sport reports that Milan are looking to sign a trequartista (advanced attacking playmaker) and Matteo Kovacic might just be the player that they are looking for.
Milan management has always been ardent admirers of the young Croatian who joined their city rivals Internazionale for a reported fee of around 11 million euros (in addition to a performance related 4million euros) in 2013 from Dinamo Zagreb (via FootballItalia).
According to Gazetta Dello Sport, Milan had previously enquired about the availability of the highly rated 21 year old creative playmaker.
Signed as an 18 year old born in Austria, Kovacic showed flashes of what he is capable of during his time at Inter. However, like so many other players, Inter never managed to get the best out of him and in 2015, following the club’s massive acquisition, he was sold to Real Madrid for 35 million euros in the summer.
Kovacic is yet to convince Zidane at Real Madrid. So far he has managed to start 7 games in La Liga and 7 substitute appearances from the bench providing two assists. His only goal came in the Champions League against Swedish club Malmo.
At this point, the transfer rumour is highly speculative if not fantastical. But Kovacic could be the midfield solution to Mihajlovic’s creative problems. So far Milan has turned to club captain Montolivo to provide them with the creative depth that they need in certain matches. A shadow of his former self, Montolivo however has only disappointed so far.
This might prompt the Milan management to look for solutions elsewhere, in Italy and abroad. Tuttosport however reports that Palermo’s Franco Vazquez is top priority for Milan’s midfield reinforcement come summer. Another player who has been linked with the Rossoneri is 18 year old Rosario starlet Giovani Lo Celso. However FootballItalia reports that the deal is extremely difficult.
