Louis van Gaal has reportedly lost the confidence of his players following a string of disappointing results both in the Premier League and in Europe.

Manchester United stooped to a new low on Thursday as they were defeated by Danish minnows FC Midtjylland in the UEFA Europa League. The result served to highlight the downward spiral that has seen the Red Devils get knocked out of the Champions League and put themselves out of the reckoning in the Premier League.

“While Van Gaal is generally well liked among the squad, the Guardian has learned this influential faction has been unsure for a while about him being able to turn the side’s fortunes around.”

The Special One at a special club

The speculation surrounding Jose Mourinho’s move to Manchester United has gained momentum in recent weeks. Mourinho has been interested in the job ever since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, and is believed to be actively pursuing the move. The Portuguese has turned down offers from a number of clubs across Europe, including AS Roma. He was most recently linked with former club Internazionale, but has since confirmed that he will not be taking over the reins from Roberto Mancini.

Jose Mourinho has a history of domestic and European success and is considered as one of the best managers in the world. Manchester United could do with his expertise especially since the Louis van Gaal experiment seems to have gone horribly wrong.

Pep Guardiola’s arrival at Manchester City next season will also have Manchester United officials worried. The Catalan shared a spirited rivalry with Jose Mourinho in the La Liga, and should the latter take up the top job at United, the two would add a special dimension to the Manchester derby.
